During the Dem  debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, the MSM – represented the other night by ABC News’ Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos – finally began vetting Barack Obama (IL), asking questions that made the candidate squirm and his supporters scream. For her part, Hillary Clinton (NY) took the opportunity to vulch. Hey, a kill is a kill.
Gibson asked Obama about his “bitter†blue collar Americans comments at a San Francisco fundraiser attended by wealthy elites and got yet another “clarificationâ€:
“[W]hen people feel like Washington’s not listening to them … then politically they end up focusing on those things that are constant, like religion. … [t]hey end up being much more concerned about votes around things like guns, where traditions have been passed on from generation to generation.â€
Hillary blasted him:
I don’t believe that my grandfather or my father, or the many people whom I have had the privilege of knowing and meeting across Pennsylvania over many years, cling to religion when Washington is not listening to them. I think that is a fundamental, sort of, misunderstanding of the role of religion and faith in times that are good and times that are bad. And I similarly don’t think that people cling to their traditions, like hunting and guns, either when they are frustrated with the government. I just don’t believe that’s how people live their lives.
Gibson also asked Obama point-blank what he knew about comments Rev. Jeremiah Wright made in his sermons before publicly disassociate himself from them a year later – and what took him so long, anyway. Obama started grinding, restating the same unsatisfying explanation he’s been giving for weeks – “I hadn’t seen the remarks that ended up playing on youTube repeatedly. … [T]he church and the body of Reverend Wright’s work, over the course of 30 years, were not represented in those snippets that were shown on television …â€Â  And when Gibson followed up with a question to Hillary asking whether she thinks all 8,000 members of Obama’s church should have gotten up and walked out, she wisely decided to camp: Â
I was asked a personal question, Charlie, and I gave a personal answer. Obviously, one’s choice of church and pastor is rooted in what one believes is what you’re seeking in church and what kind of, you know, fellowship you find in church. … I have no reason to doubt that a lot of good things were happening in that church — you get to choose your pastor. You don’t choose your family, but you get to choose your pastor. And when asked a direct question, I said I would not have stayed in the church,
Obama knew Hillary was racking up hit points like crazy, and made evasive maneuvers:Â Number one, I wasn’t aware of all these statements, and I can understand how people would take offense; but number two, the church is a community that extends beyond the pastor and that church has done outstanding work for many, many years. The third point I guess I would make is once again that unless we can bridge some of these divides we’re not going to solve problems in this country. And what my entire body of work over the last 20 years has been devoted to is getting blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asians, Native Americans, young, old to work together, starting when I was a community organizer. And my own life embodies that diversity. That’s what America’s about and that’s what this campaign has been about.Â
Then Stephanopoulos reinforced Gibson’s efforts to pin Obama down by asking whether he thinks Reverend Wright “loves America as much as you do†and Obama had no choice but to strafe:Â
Obama: [T]he notion that somehow that the American people are going to be distracted once again by comments not made by me but by somebody who is associated with me, that I have disowned, I think doesn’t give the American people enough credit.Â
Stephanopoulos: You’ve disowned him? Â
Obama: The comments, comments that I’ve disowned. Then that is not something that I think –Â
Stephanopoulos: But you do believe he’s as patriotic as you are? Â
Obama: This is somebody who’s a former Marine. And so I have – I believe that he loves this country, but I also believe that he’s somebody who, because of the experiences he’s had over the course of a lifetime, is also angry about the injustices that he’s seen. Â
Again, Hillary doesn’t miss a chance to score a hit:
As leaders, we have a choice who we associate with and who we apparently give some kind of seal of approval to. And I think that it wasn’t only the specific remarks, but some of the relationships with Reverend Farrakhan, with giving the church bulletin over to the leader of Hamas to put a message in. You know, these are problems, and they raise questions in people’s minds. And so this is a legitimate area, as everything is when we run for office, for people to be exploring and trying to find answers.Â
Stephanopoulos followed up on “the general theme of patriotism in your relationships,†by zeroing in on Obama’s friendship with Weather Underground alumnus William Ayers who “bombed the Pentagon, the Capitol and other buildings [and] never apologized for that†[contextual link added by The Stiletto] and asked him to “explain that relationship for the voters, and explain to Democrats why it won’t be a problemâ€: Â
This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who’s a professor of English in Chicago, who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He’s not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis. And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values, doesn’t make much sense, George. Â
Now Hillary joins in to gank Obama: “I also believe that Senator Obama served on a board with Mr. Ayers for a period of time, the Woods Foundation, which was a paid directorship position. And if I’m not mistaken, that relationship with Mr. Ayers on this board continued after 9/11 and after his reported comments.†[Contextual link added by The Stiletto.]Â
Mortally wounded, Obama scores a rare hit on Hillary: “[B]y Senator Clinton’s own vetting standards, I don’t think she would make it, since President Clinton pardoned or commuted the sentences of two members of the Weather Underground, which I think is a slightly more significant act than me.†Â
But it was TLTL. Dude, you played like a noob and Hillary owned you in this debate.

The backlash against this “debate” was not about the mean moderators going after St. Barack. It was about the moderators asking about trivial nonsense. (“Gee, did you know Obama once shook hands with…gasp…a 1960s radical? They even served on a charitable board together!)
Really, there are plenty of substantial issues that the moderators could’ve asked about. Americans seem to be growing tired of this pettiness. Obama knows this. Gibson, Stephanopolous, Clinton, and their defenders don’t.
He didn’t hold up to the grilling very well.
This man is not appling for Manager of Kinko’s our fate would be in his hands.
Let them keep holding all of them up to the fire on every issue.
Truffle,
You saying that the reason Obama didn’t do well in the debate is because he knows Americans are tired of the pettiness is just an excuse.
If the questions were so petty and stupid, why couldn’t he answer them better? Why did he stumble on such trivial questions?
Obama is good a giving speeches, but he sucks when asked a question point blank or when he is asked follow-up questions.
He looked like a lost puppy next to experienced Hillary Clinton.
For the record…George Stephanopolos worked as a press secretary under Clinton in his first term. His association with the Clintons would make a reasonable person think that he should have excused himself from being a moderator for this debate. Both he and Gibson seemed to delight in making big news of minor events that have little to do with either candidate’s positions on the presidency. The lapel pin flag issue is the biggest leap about pseudo patriotism ever. Where did Gibson dig up the woman from Latrobe to ask that truly embarrassing question ? When there are people like this voting in an election, America deserves presidents like George Bush. He probably has a lapel pin for his underwear, yet he never served when asked to do so.
The Stiletto thinks the point about Stephanopoulos recusing himself from moderating the debate is well-taken. However, the questions Obama was asked were not trivial. How many times do we need to hear each candidate recite the same rehearsed soundbites about the Iraq war, the economy, etc.? Obama is the most liberal member of Congress. Is he also a closet Marxist? A closet black separatist? Obama’s ill-considered associations have raised doubts in some voters’ minds and the MSM is actually doing him a favor by giving him a chance to dispel those doubts so that voters don’t carry them into the voting booth and pull the lever for his opponent.
As usual, this debate was set for one candidate, with the comentators asking questins that Hiliary wanted asked. Why are we wasting time with all this, when Hiliary has the super delegates in her pocket. Oh, I forgot, her husband is a super delegate, and can persuade the others to vote his way. I was shocked to find out that the super delegates, answer to no one, and can actually elect our president. So what happened to our votes electing the president. As it was explained on the news, the super delegates are more qualified to elect the president then the common people, because we don’t know who the best candidte is for the job. What happened to the, for the people and by the people. I guess that the politicians decided to take that right away from us too.
The superdelegates will not elect the next president, only choose which Dem nominee will face McCain. Although Dems enjoy a numerical advantage amongst the electorate going into the election, national polling trends suggest that McCain is holding his own or very slightly ahead. In the end, he will either win cross-over Dem votes and capture the White House, or he will fall short. The outcome is still in the hands of the people – particularly independents – not the super delegates.
The Super delegates usually go with whatever their districts voted for and not what they want or else people would be pretty pissed.
Also, Hillary doesn’t have them in her pocket. A lot of the Clintons’ old coworkers and such are endorsing Obama. He is the most left-wing candidate.
Why won’t Obama post his birth certificate and transcripts??..What is he hiding??..Lots of unquiring minds out here want to know….What will Rezko say as the trial gets under way??..We need to know the real person he is to be able to make an educated choice…….Seems like the media is scared to pursue it……
As Stelitto mentioned above..The questions Obama was asked in the debate needed not only to be asked but answered truthfully..All we got was the same flip-flop rhetoric that he always spews out..Then whines or hollers ” race card”.. and the debate was unfair….Hello…Like Hillary said..Her dirty laundry has been gone over and scrutined multiple times…It is high time he airs his laundry before the Republicans get ahold of him, chew him up and spit him out!!!..Wah,wah!!!..
Whatever.
I think the public backlash against this ridiculous debate says all that really needs to be said. Your blog is ancillary, unimportant and does miss the point.
What it indicates is that the MSM like you is not in touch with the interests of the people for change.
If Obama wanted to do the guilty by association game, the Clintons would be toast right now. Their associations aren’t just personally damning, but in the process of being litigated.
He’s just not a bottom feeder like that. Try and take the hint and elevate your own purposes when you write.
The wearing of a flag pin was not uniformly applied. The moderators and Sen. Clinton did’t wear a flag pin during the debate.
The direction of the questioning implies that any one including the moderators and Sen. Clinton are not good loyal Americans – hardly an honest observation.
I almost never wear my flag pin as is true of most of America. During the Underground Weatherman Days, I was considered a bit of a radical. We fought for the rights of the poor, the elderly, the handicapped. One of my press conferences went as far as London. For the action, I got ESHAC’s Man of the Year award from Mayor Henry Meier in the church basement. There were 300 present & lots of press at the event. Am I any less an American?
