Amazing that when I write something like this, I get a lot commentary from people trying to sell pay for protection identity theft services.

Sadly enough, Attritiion.org (a not for pay effort) just stopped their efforts for the very same reason.

"We need to remember that the industry is unregulated and all the current litigation might be an argument for some sort of certification (regulation)."

GOOD! Regulate the hell out of it! Why do we have ID Theft? Because companies freely buy, trade, and sell our data everywhere. That practice must stop or ID Theft won't.

At least we have credit freezes now (regulation) to protect us against their greed. Oh, and avoid Lifelock. If you have a freeze, their services are almost entirely not needed.

It is time that the industry or the FTC provide some protection for the public about ID protection with a check list of what one service can do and cannot do.

None of them including the three previous comments protect people from ID theft and medical ID Theft.

ID Theft and fraud could be silent for years and once your ID is stolen you are a victim for life. Buying a mobile phoen with a stolen ID does not appear on your credit report.

So if they provide any protection, they should provide life protection not a yearly fee for life which comes to thousands.

No one can protect you from medical ID theft because medical files are private and confidential unlike credit reports.

No one can protect you from employment ID theft since all the recent stories in the last few days say that the IRS is practically doing nothing regarding ID Theft for IRS filing.

There are many more instances of how criminals use stolen IDs that legal services and credit monitoring or freezing cannot protect.

Database trawling services are just as useless. All databases are supposed to be secured from outsiders... so how can outsiders trawl those databases for your IDs f]if they cannot access them?

The whole prottection services industry for ID Theft is simply a one big con job. snake oil.

The Attorney General of Illinois recently said that Credit Monitoring services are ineffective in protecting consumers' identities unless they provide services in all 5 types of identity theft, AND include access to an attorney, which is exactly what you get with Pre-Paid Legal Services. We do Credit Restoration, which means that you have experts doing the heavy work FOR you.
The State of Oklahoma recently passed a tax benefit to OK residents, who can deduct the cost of their Pre-Paid Legal membership from their state income taxes... Sounds like an official endorsement of the service to me. For more information : www.prepaidlegal.com/hub/guydrennan

This is very interesting and very true. However there is one company that provides ID Theft protection in ALL areas Credit, Social Security, Drivers License, Medical ID, and Character/Criminal. And when I say protection that includes FULL restoration. That company is Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc. For more information: www.prepaidlegal.com/hub/trombatore21
