I don’t know about you but I think the average person watching “The View” understood this to mean that Obama is saying “then I wouldn’t have felt comfortable staying there at the church if Wright hadn’t retired AND acknowledged… The second sentence makes you think a conversation betwwen Wright and Obama took place took place and Wright recanted. No, No, No. This is a magician’s “slight of hand” trick. Obama carefully chose his words to give the impression that he had spoken to Wright and that Wright had “acknowledged” that what he had said had deeply offended people and were inappropriate and mischaracterized, etc… When I watched this it sent up a red flag for me because I don’t think Wright thinks he did any thing “objectionable” and I don’t think Obama would dare try to put words in his mouth.

Obama spokesman Bill Burton said the senator’s remarks did not imply that Wright has expressed misgivings about his statements.
“Sen. Obama was clearly saying that were Rev. Wright not retiring, he would need to be assured that the reverend understood why what he had said had deeply offended people and mischaracterized the greatness of this country,” Burton said.

I think this greatly changes the meaning viewers got from the video. Can you let viewers know about the error and that all Obama is saying is if Rev hadn’t retired he wouldn’t have felt comfortable staying in the church. Obviously that excuse is suspect to many like myself as much of what Rev. Wright said and did that is so objectionable happened over several years. What was Obama’s excuse then? It’s obvious to me that the only thing Obama was “clearly saying” is he thinks “Viewers” are fools.
