Had the companies involved (Purina, Eukanuba, Baxter, others) in either the pet food--melamine contamination or the heparin--oversulfated chondroitin problem bothered to do a basic electrophoresis separation and nitrogen quantitation of the raw materials as part of their quality control tests, the problems would almost certainly have been detected before the contaminated products were used in manufacturing. I think that when dealing with China and some of the other Asian countries, this 'ounce of prevention' would serve everyone better.
