Goobees Short Film on ReelConnect.com
Movie Review by Chad Clemans
Goobees (2:45) has recently become a top rated short film on ReelConnect.com, and as such, I have decided that it should be the subject of my next movie review. Goobees tells the story of animated candies, the sugary ones vs. chocolate candies, in a literal showdown for supremacy. The fatalities get recycled with each new purchase of a Goobees bag of candy, as the purchaser becomes the onlooker into this war of wars. As for the message, the film lightly comments on which is more insatiable, the curiosity inherent in human nature, or physical appetite; my vote goes to curiosity.
As for the technical aspects, my hat goes off to the filmmakers who are as follows:
Patrick O’Brien (Shading, Lighting, Rendering)
Michael Losure (Shading, Editing, Camera, Animation)
P. Antonio Piedra (Modeling, Set Design, Matte Paintings)
Seth Freeman (Modeling, Rigging, Animation)
Barbara Schubert & Dupage Symphony Orchestra (Music)
Lee Madderford (Music)
Greg Armstrong (Music Mastering)
I don’t feel the need to elaborate on the quality accomplished by each of these filmmakers in their respective areas because each of these aspects were executed especially well. Even the font, down to the dotted o’s, was very tasteful. The characters were imaginative, especially the candy corn crow, although I couldn’t figure out why the burial teams of kisses were wearing aviator glasses, or why the isses in the factory marched like Oompa-Loompahs while all others walked normal.
The static deaths seemed ever more static due to the embellishment of wind while the flight of the body cart seemed to poke fun at this playful seeming death. The foley was excellent and the music was especially good, all except for the operatic voices during the aftermath introduction, which didn’t seem to fit well. The music which followed, however, during the assorted candies creation phase, was very playful and fitting. The ending with the eaten bags of candy didn’t seem to align with the fact that the onlooker never ate the first bag of Goobees; however, this was a great short film overall, and should fair well as a demo reel item for each of the filmmakers; thus hopefully securing for each of them great opportunities for further work in the future.
