How to Be a Megastar Live! (DVD with CD)After more than a decade of sold out shows and ecstatic audiences, Blue Man Group decided to take their show on the road. And throughout 2006 and 2007 they did just that, showcasing the How To Be A Megastar Tour around the world for packed houses and equally satisfied audiences. This DVD/CD set is the result of a show at the American Airlines Center in Dallas in front of 40,000 screaming fans.

Much like the theatrical show, the How To Be A Megastar Tour features a mix of rock music, beat-driven rhythm and unusual props. The basic premise of the show is that the Blue Men view an infomercial featuring a quick-talking salesman (SNL’S Fred Armisen) offering a How to Be a Rockstar training manual for all those interested. Of course, this includes the Blue Men and they order up a manual to be delivered at lightning-fast speed.  And that’s when the show kicks into high gear, as the manual teaches the Blue Men all the proper Rock Concert movements, from #1 (The Basic Head Bob) to #237 (Taking the Audience on a… well, you’ll have to watch to find out). Each suggestion is increasingly hilarious, varying between insightfully dead-on and crazily off-center.

The show is an hour and a half long and includes several pipe drum performances as well as a few actual songs, though the lyrical songs (featuring a few lead singers) detract a bit from the quiet subversiveness of a regular Blue Man show. There’s even a cover of The Who’s “Baba O’Riley” towards the end, which is impressive, but again feels a bit unusual for the typically silent Blue Men. Unsurprisingly, the rhythm section never fails and the show is at its best when there are no lyrics and the Blue Men are banging away at their various instruments while staring wildly at each other or out into the audience. The How to Be a Rockstar voiceover also serves to drive the turbulent madness, with its bland narration and matter-of-fact instructions.

There’s more action, more story, and more music in the touring show – and the marshmallow catching trick is still included for anyone who’s seen the original. The real value here is the simple fact that there’s finally some Blue Man Group captured on DVD for anyone who hasn’t been able to make it to the live show, or for those who have seen the live show and want more. The best part of this DVD/CD collection is that you can choose to watch the action while listening, or simply listen to it with the 19-track audio recording. The DVD includes several extras, but the “Inside the Tubes” documentary is the best, featuring a candid interview with the three founders of Blue Man Group. Any fan of the show will want this volume for their collection, while those who haven’t made it to a show yet should look here to see what they’re missing.
