Wine Extract Keeps Fat Mice Healthy

Well, haven’t we been reading for years that drinking red wine is why the French remain so healthy, in spite of eating so much rich food? Well, besides eating it in small portions, and getting a lot of exercise, especially of late, since the rioting youths are burning the cars and busses. (Ohh, low blow there! Sorry, couldn’t help myself.)

It seems that a key ingredient, called resveratrol, is the magic bullet, as it “lowers the rate of diabetes, liver problems and other fat-related ill effects” according to this article. The substance is found in is “found in the skin of grapes and in other plants, including peanuts and some berries”. Red wine has long been associated with benefits albeit in a more anecdotal fashion. Like so many other things, we are sternly told by the health Nazis that we would live longer, if we only gave them up. No, we probably won’t live all that much longer, eschewing those pleasures… but it would just seem like it!

This is a wonderful development, if the success with mice can be replicated with monkeys, who are somewhat closer to humans. Now, if they can just nail down chocolate as a health food, it would be just perfect. (more details here.)
