Thanks Gina. Great article to shine light on the epidemic.

Bullies have always existed and will always exist. We must prepare ourselves to act skillfully and effectively. We can do that as a society (laws, culture) and as individuals.

Laws are good and necessary. They will provide leverage.

But it still always comes down to the individuals – you and the people you work with.

Because someone tries to bully you is not your fault. Bullies bully. That’s what they do. You’ll find them everywhere. If you haven’t learned to protect yourself yet, that’s what you need to do. Be courageous.

Have you prepared yourself for the fight ahead? Educate and train yourself and your children to expect that you’ll meet overt bullies and stealthy (subtle, sneaky, covert), manipulative controllers at home, at work and in school. Learn to find allies, shine a light on it and act even more skillfully than the predators do.

For adults facing bullies at work, at home and in relationships, and for teaching their children how to stop bullies in their tracks, please visit my web site (http://www.BulliesBeGone.com) and blog (http://www.BulliesBeGoneBlog.com). You’ll find useful examples, advice, books and CDs. Check out my articles in the Denver Business Journal and other business publications.

Best wishes,
Ben

Sherrill

Congratulations on getting the anti-workplace bullying legislation in front of the public and law makers.

I know that the biggest argument against such a law is that it will spawn a deluge of frivolous litigation. Not exactly sure how they can say that without actually having the law in place in order to find out...

Ever notice how relatively parallel the arguments are to the ones that were against ADA and even civil rights? The unfortunate thing is that targets or victims now are no less victims of a law that is yet to be than the ones who will enjoy the protection after laws are in place.

Keep up the good fight and good luck with your efforts in Vermont.

I am a whistleblower, I blew the whistle on my boss. I reported her to the U.S. Department of Labor, her old boss, the U. S. Government. A retired single army nurse came north and with her she brought her baggage. Today I have managed to get the Healthy Workplace Bill introduced in Vermont. Our fight has just begun and I for one do not intend to stop lobbying to stop the insanity that takes place in the workplace.

Tim Fields site was the first one I came across, I had to wonder if part of his cancer was due to the stress. I will be in Montreal June 4-6 at an international conference on Workplace Bullying along with Dr. Gary Namie and his wife Ruth, Tom another coordinator from New York.

I hope one day to be able to tell my children and my grandchildren I had been able to contribute to ending bullying.

Hi, just note that you quote Tim Field as if he is alive, he died in January 2006 of cancer (but his work lives on). You can also visit my website www.worktrauma.org if you would like a South African perspective on the topic of workplace bullying - I like your article.
