I wish to take strong issue with Mr. Kent's account of the 1954 Madison Square rally for Senator McCarthy. I was on the stage that night, seated next to an associate, former Congressman Hamilton S, Fish, and I never saw anyone "dragged down the aisle," or any chanting of "kill the communist." I do remember that night very well, and the incident described just did not occur. Neither was the platform filled with only "ex-generals" and the Doonsbury-like "elderly ladies in white tennis shoes." In addition to Congressman Fish, a distinguished American who helped found the American Legion and introduced the legislation to create the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington Cemetery, I did see on the platform such people as Senator McCarthy's wife Jean, the Senator's close associate, Rabbi Schultz, and several other well-known dignitaries.

"High Quality Reporting" is incompatible with factual falsehoods - the founder of Opus Dei cannot be considered for sainthood as he was already declared one in 2002. And he was not an admirer of Hitler, quite to the contrary, in late 1930 - early 1940 Spain, where the dominant political faction was supportive of Hitler's Germany, he was warning anyone about its horrors.
High quality reporting is also incompatible with "apparently"s and "so history goes" statements.

Mr. Kent

Your comments are in fact a demonstration of the real "fascism" in America today. The complete rejection of opposing points of view, especially if they are right wing and religious! Your remarks about Mr. Buckley are not just mean spirited, they are outright lies. You may wish to speak with Juan Williams who spoke on network news last night about his regard for Mr. Buckley's concern for all races. God help us (if of course He really is there) if your PC attitudes ever succeed in quieting all but their own.

Any time you print hearsay, you're doing someone an injustice. When the someone is dead and unable to defend themselves against your charges (which are largely ridiculous), then the injustice is magnified ten-fold.
