Autism Campaigners are urging Mr. Leslie Moonves, Chief Executive Officer CBS Corporation and Mr. Sumner Redstone, Executive Chairman, CBS Corporation to do something positive in the light of the CBS ‘Big Brother’ controversy and raise awareness of autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, by airing programs on World Autism Day on the 2nd of April this year.

The first ever World Autism Awareness Day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in New York on the recommendation of Qatar. Autism organisations are planning activities in many countries on World Autism Day on the 2nd of April.

CBS executives have been asked to show their commitment to parents, carers, children and adults with autism and Asperger’s Syndrome through awareness raising TV programs on World Autism Day.

The CBS ‘Big Brother’ TV Show was recently in hot water when a ‘Big Brother’ contestant Adam Jasinksi called people with developmental disabilities ‘retards.’Fellow contestants immediately responded to his insensitive remarks.

Thousands of people are continuing to protest, the US autism organisation Autism United demanded an apology from CBS and called for ‘Big Brother’ to be axed. Meanwhile Lowe’s, the second largest home improvement retailer in the US has pulled all advertising from the CBS ‘Big Brother’ TV Show.

Karen Cobb, a spokesperson for Lowe’s, said in a statement: “Lowe’s has strict guidelines that govern the placement of our advertising. Our company advertises primarily in national, network prime-time television programs and on a variety of cable outlets. Lowe’s constantly reviews advertising buys to make certain they are consistent with its policy guidelines. Lowe’s doesn’t routinely advertise on the show “Big Brother” and has taken steps to ensure that our advertising isn’t appearing on future shows.”

CBS is now being asked to participate in the United Nations World Autism Day and try to help raise awareness of autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.
