Ed, I'm sorry to read that your notable and public talents are being limited by this disability. Most of us who are honest are very dissatisfied with the traditional arguments and apologetics that try to explain why God allows suffering. Something is wrong with our presuppositions, our God-view, or maybe the questions themselves. Like you say, all we can know for sure is that we can help each other. You have certainly done that in many ways for many people over your lifetime thus far. I'm hoping you'll be able to continue your life of service, perhaps in some new ways. And as I often tell people who are flat on their backs (literally, in your case), your most productive days my still be ahead of you. With respect, and all my best--Mark

You are in my prayers.

Have you tried audiobooks and podcasts? As I get older (and here I have less access to books) I find they are a godsend.(no pun intended).

And the best book on suffering and God is found in the NPR series PBS series "A question of God: LINK
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/questionofgod/resources/index.html

As for "christians" who don't do anything for the poor: yes. I know. Frustrates the hell out of me too.

On the other hand, a lot of them are doing things small things...maybe not working at the homeless shelter, but providing room and board to a sick mother or bringing food to a sick neighbor.
