As soon as I popped this one on the player I recognized the venue, the veritable Church Street Station in Orlando, Florida. I have no idea how many concerts were taped here, but it must be in the hundreds. It is great to see companies like Quantum Leap dusting off the archives and releasing these long forgotten and lost concerts. This particular concert happened sometime around 1984 and features Rex Allen Sr, and Rex Allen Jr, with guest Boxcar Willie.
It certainly is an interesting concert, if only for the choice of songs selected. Rex Allen Jr for example includes Great Balls Of Fire, and Air That I Breathe, neither of which I would classify as standard country fare.
Rex Allen Sr takes a more conservative approach, singing his 1968 hit Tiny Bubbles, and Tumblin’ Tumbleweeds (now that has to be the classic Country and Western song title of all time!). Rex Sr make take the prize for conservative choice of music, but his outfit is anything but! It is worth buying the DVD just to check out the duds, emerald green, and sequins! It is interesting to contrast father and son, two very different styles of performer, and two very different generations of music.
Boxcar Willie puts on his best ‘hobo’ act with a very entertaining set, including his signature Hobo Heaven. Also included is a medley of Hank Williams songs, Cold, Cold Heart, Move It On Over, and Wabash Cannonball.
