Celebrating Around the WorldAs ubiquitous as that big purple dinosaur and his declarations of things being “Stu-u-u-u-pendous!” has become, it’s still pretty incredible to realize that he’s been on the air for a full two decades. That means that the original group of kids that grew up watching him are now getting ready to graduate from college. But if Barney is aging, he shows no signs of it in his new 54 minute special.

When Ben and Tracy can’t agree on what they want to do with their free time together, Barney decides to take them around the world to show them how people around the world celebrate, and to teach them that though everyone is different, it’s the inside that counts. Stopping in Brazil, Kenya, India, Japan and Ireland, the kids witness unique cultural dances, foods, and greetings specific to each area. Though they’re all enteraining, the tap-dancing section in Ireland is especially impressive.

As the producers at Hit Entertainment explain, “When Barney was first introduced, his mission was to be a friend to all children through love, sharing, caring, good manners, and of course, imagination.” With this episode, it’s clear that the creators of Barney have maintained their ability to relate to children and present a lovable and entertaining storyline. Any fan of Barney is sure to appreciate this newest addition.

The addition of “Fuzzbuzz Catches a Cold” (a special episode of the new show Fifi and the Flowertots) is a welcome addition to the DVD, fusing some of the design elements of Bob the Builder with a fantastical world of flower people and talking insects. The storyline is fun and funny, and the characters are all distinct and creative. It’s sure to be a new family favorite.
