		<description>Ben: If what you say is true -- "In God We Trust"-- was added during the McCarthy era (when "under God was added to the Pledge of Allegiance") then I would agree with you: it has to go. Such is not the case.  The U.S. Treasury website http://www.treas.gov/education/fact-sheets/currency/in-god-we-trust.shtml reports this: "The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was placed on United States coins largely because of the increased religious sentiment existing during the Civil War."  

Of course I too would oppose mandatory use of it in the schools, etc.

If all it was was a phrase on the currency, I would probably agree.  It isn't.  It was declared the National Motto by legislation passed during McCarthyism to embody the notion that We Trust In God; those who do not are 'them.'  Its use is not restricted to currency - it has been mandated to be put on posters in public school classrooms and in town council meeting rooms.
