It was not 'international outcry' that led to the heightened sentences for the rapists in the case of 'Qatif Girl'. It was that she went to the court herself to appeal the lenient sentences levied on her rapists. Her male companion did not appeal either the rapists' sentences nor his own. Many suspect that his rapists did not receive the death penalty because he was Shi'a; others, however, report that the rapists were as well.
