KDE? Gnome? you are speaking a language that is foreign to me! :)

There are lots of great distro's out there, I have at some point played with Red Hat, Fedora, Debian, Knopix, and who knows what else. The major problem I had with all of them was that to use them effectively you needed to know a lot of techy stuff.

Linspire, which is based on Ubuntu, makes the assumption that the user is an idiot, and I like that! After 34 years in the computer business I am fed up with having to learn a whole bunch of stuff to do a simple task. Yup, I am lazy, and proud of it :)

so what are you using gnome or KDE? I am guessing that since you are using Pidgin you are using Gnome. Give KDE a try, you'll find the applications are far richer than Gnome, plus it has a good IRC client in it. One of the more polished linux distro's openSUSE is what I use, give it a try sometime, actually now you have cross from the darkness into the light of linux, you should give all major distro's a try and see which best suits you :) Good luck and welcome to the world of freedom. BTW, you can just go to their websites and download their linux disto's for free, like www.opensuse.org, you can go there and download the full operating system for free :)
