News Item:
Al Gore wins Nobel Peace Prize

Alfred Nobel, in case you weren’t aware, is the man who invented dynamite.  He also got very rich off his discovery.  His invention, however, troubled Nobel greatly when it was put to use in war.  He then set up a foundation with what he considered blood money to counter the effects of his explosive.  The intent was to urge humanity to seek peaceful resolutions to conflict.  Hence the Nobel Peace Prize.

Nobel’s instructions were rather clear.  The prize should go “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.”

Let’s take a look at some recent awards,
to see how they fit in with that definition:

Al Gore –
who made a documentary about global warming.

Wangari Maathai –
won it for planting trees.

Yasser Arafat –
who couldn’t let go of his automatic weapon when he addressed the UN.

Rigoberta Menchu –
whose heart rending autobiography turned out to be a fraud.

Rumor has it that the next presentation of The Prize will be held in prime time, in conjunction with the MTV Music Awards.  But that’s just a rumor…
