"I realize that Linspire has the Linux weenies panties in a knot, it is not pure, even worse they are embracing some Microsoft technology. But most users could care less if the computer is made of Marshmallows and the operating system comes from Mars, all people want is a the tool." And the primary reason that this "weenie" and others, knickers are in a twist is that with an attitude like that, you would not HAVE the alternative of GNU/Linux to use. A refusal to accept proprietary in the first place created the alternative that you are so blithely willing to sell down the river for convenience. Repackaging the efforts of others and then having the temerity to imply that this work infringes upon Microsoft patents on behalf of those same individuals is a knee in the groin from Lindows to the very community whose efforts they purloin.

>I’ll stand behind my review, it delivers what it promises, and is easy to use.

Hmm, I have spent thirty too many years in the computer industry. These days I view them as a tool. If you want to drive a nail you use a hammer. If you want to make a hole you use a drill.

I do reviews, books, movies, music, Beer (I wish) and I use the computer to write my reviews.

I read your comment about web browsing and my eyes glazed over. I just want to point and click, I don't want to spend my waning years compiling code.

I run several other platforms, I have a Fedora system that is a server, and an Apple G3 that runs Debian, both were bears to set up. And on the rare occasion that I have to mess with them I usually end up wanting to commit Hari Kari!

I realize that Linspire has the Linux weenies panties in a knot, it is not pure, even worse they are embracing some Microsoft technology. But most users could care less if the computer is made of Marshmallows and the operating system comes from Mars, all people want is a the tool.

"Generally speaking Linux requires a PHD in Astro Physics just to log in."
=> That's a narrowminded assumption born from the past. Today's distros are far from requiring an PhD of any sort. Heck, I've guided people from all walks of life into installing Linux on their systems. (regardless of age, race, religion, or occupation). NONE of them have a PhD...And nor do I!

"It then requires a double PHD just to browse a web site."
=> More Nonsense. This is how you "browse the web" with a "harder" distro like Arch Linux. (Assuming desktop clean install to begin with)

(1) In KDE or Gnome, open a terminal window. Login as root.
(2) type this: pacman -S firefox
(3) Wait a few minutes to download and install.
(4) Now you're surfing the web.

What part of this requires a Double PhD? Oh that's right, NONE.

"For under $50 this has to be the bargain of the year."
=> A bargin of the year would be using an Operating System that you don't need to pay for to begin with. (That means legally acquire. NOT warez, pirate, etc).

Linspire is basically Ubuntu. (They charge you money for their subscription service, tech support, and the extra stuff pre-tacked on).

You would save yourself US$50 by using Ubuntu, Kubuntu or some other variant and then go to this site => http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu:Feisty

Another useful distro for the beginner is PCLinuxOS. Again, like Ubuntu, its free.

All the common things you'll encounter (with solutions) are on that website. (includes how to install media codecs, Microsoft fonts, 3D desktop effects, workin with Windows partitions, virtualisation, etc)
