Actually, the true picture of Islam can't be found in newspapers any more than a true picture of Christianity. Every nut case gets quoted, and often quoted out of context.

Indeed, it's worse, because the Saudi money trail is fostering a strict puritanical version of Islam as if all Muslims followed their lead. The Saudi version of Islam resembles the Puritans at their worse, but even in the Arab world, is not typical. Most Muslims follow the Sufi style of Sunni Islam, where your relationship to God is not based on rules or intermediaries, but is based on love and reverence.

Most pious Muslims have more in common with pious Baptists or pious Catholics: They love God and wish to serve him. Many are family oriented with strict morals. The press loves to ridicule this by pointing out the bad and unusal aspects, but the morality isn't much different than the US in 1950...

They object to dirty movies, half naked fashions, and are strict with their daughter's morals, but I'm old enough to remember when my cousin, with a PhD, upset her mom when she moved into her own apartment at age 30. Italian American girls just didn't do such things, even in 1950.
