The Material Girl went to Malawi, and Angela Jollie went to Botswana, and now it’s Rwanda’s turn to be the focus of a Hollywood celebrity wanting to play Miss Bountiful.
Yup, Paris Hilton plans to visit Rwanda.
Hilton says it’s all part of her new, postjail commitment to use her celebrity to bring the spotlight to what she feels are important causes around the world….
“There’s so much need in that area, and I feel like if I go, it will bring more attention to what people can do to help,” Hilton said of the region.
Making the Dose remark:
Having Exhausted North America’s Patience,
Paris Moves on to New Continent
Yup. That about says it all.
I guess I shouldn’t be cynical about a girl trying to get some good publicity after her DUI conviction. But you don’t “use” human beings as a prop for your goodness: charity should come from a loving heart with the wish to help, not a tour complete with a publicity expert.
Well, I guess at least she hasn’t adopted a “trophy baby” like other celebrities.
Of course, if she really wanted to help, she might try actually working.
I can see it now: The Simple LIfe meets Worlds Apart.
I can’t wait to see her tilling sweetpotatoes and carrying a waterjug on her head…

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a TrackbackThanks so much for posting this, Nancy. I really needed a chance to scoogh (That’s ’scoff’ and ‘laugh’ at the same time.) today! This is about as scooghable as news events come.
Careful on the “trophy baby” thing, though. Contrary to media hype and spin, that hasn’t yet been the case, and since there’s no chance Paris would pass a homestudy it won’t be happening any time soon.
I have been to Rwanda. Twice. And while I’ve enjoyed The Simple Life for its derision of American farm culture, I cannot bear that Paris’s trip may have the same result on a people whose plight has haunted me these 13 years.
Rwandese people could become heartsick over the question, Why Now? Why not when we were getting gang-raped and slaughtered?
But of course they’ll know.
It’s because she can go there and get a personality boost — just like a tit-boost. But will she? Rwandese people CROWD you, it’s how they figure they can trust the Muzungu. I don’t know that she’ll handle too much of that humanity. And fuck her if she can’t.
Hi Nancy,
I agree with you wholeheartedly on the so called charitable actions(?) Paris Hilton is supposedly planning. I truly feel sorry for her. Bet on it, all of this is being directed and produced by her parents and their legal entourage to keep the Hilton name is semi decent standing. Although I totally appreciate your courage in starting this site, I think you and I both know that care needs to be addressed, as judgment and hate through idle chat serves only to escalate more of the same.
Unfortunately, our world today is full of people like this. They talk the talk, but do not truly walk the walk. I am an Americorps Vista Alumni and have witnessed firsthand the truly beautiful people who really give of themselves and then some. My involvement in Habitat for Humanity has left me with a knowledge of the true beauty of people’s hearts. The Executive Director, President of the board, and other members of the board in my area spend their weekends physically working on building the new homes for Habitat for Humanity. These are people who work many, many hours each week at their jobs, and then go out and spend their limited spare time actually doing
what is truly a part of their hearts-making it come true for others. My respect for these people, among the many others I know of who truly give of themselves is incredible. I know there are many others out there who have the true calling of God in their hearts and work endlessly to accomplish something, anything to help others.
On a personal note, I am a single mother in my fifty’s. I do not have the funds to help others, but I do what I can. There are so many in our world who do the same, and it all counts. The Paris Hilton’s and others who use the needs of others to accomplish their own selfish ends will get what they deserve in the end - an empty heart.
At this time I am emotionally committed to a cause (based on first hand knowledge) in a situation here involving five children who have lost their mom to life in prison and possibly their father will follow when his trial begins.
I am determined somehow, to raise funds for these kids for their future needs, i.e., college, etc. I am also determined to stop the nasty, blogs that are posted daily in our newspaper about the parents. People who claim that they care are posting their comments, but not one has said anything about how the kids in this situation can be helped. Go figure. Right back to where I used the line “judgment and hatred”
