Holding an orthodox society to extremely liberal standards (openness regarding sexuality, for one)is extremely hypocritical. Homosexuality was taboo in the US 50 years ago - and Iran now is way more orthodox than the US was 50 years ago.

Even liberal democracies like India do not discuss Homosexuality in public. As a matter of fact, "unnatural sex" is illegal in India. I personally (and a lot of other Indians) expect the democratic process to change the law in a few years - not immediately. Would PM Singh from India be subject to similar questions and humiliation?

Americans taking offense to this statement is akin to them laughing at a poor nation just because it is poor. And all the media attention towards this underscores how out of touch with reality the more prosperous western nations are.

Yeah ... Right ... His speeches have been one laugh-fest after another. Maybe he's only in the US to audition for Leno's job?

has it occurred to you that Ahmadinejad spoke in _jest_? i have been surprised at how the media has latched onto this in a death grip and refuses to let go. if you look at A's face when he says that, he is grinning. don't take everything you hear at face value.
