JP2 was suffering from terminal neurological deterioration from Parkinson's disease. It affected his swallowing, and he was fed for awhile with a feeding tube.

But when he developed septic shock from a Urinary tract infection (probably from a catheter) he decided to go home and die. The mortality from this is very high, no matter where it is treated: Up to 90 percent, and probably higher in a frail elderly man.</description>
