U.S. Splits With Europeans Over UN Resolution Sanctioning Iran

Or Pardon Me, is My Cynicism Showing? Remembering the sanctions against Saddam Hussein’s Iraq, and the way that they were profitably subverted right left and center, remembering the Oil For Food Program, I am left to wonder if the fix isn’t already in; private firms comfortably profiting from illicit trade, while their governments stoutly uphold the sanctions and piously lecture the US on how to handle these messy little matters,

If it weren’t for Iran funding Iraqi militias and insurgents, I doubt I’d care much at all about what the Europeans do or don’t do, as regards Iran and their nuclear ambitions. They are welcome to it, nukes and all, being after all in much closer range, as President Ahmedinajad, AKA Grubby the First so kindly reminded them last week. Kinda like old times, being threatened with nuclear annihilation, only from a different direction.

The only thing I’d want from Iran these days, is our Embassy in Teheran. I’d wanted it scoured clean, refitted, redecorated and refurnished, and turned back over to us, with a nice little ceremony. A gold key to the front door is optional, but an Iranian delegation to every single one of the American hostages taken in 1979, offering formal apologies is a non-negotiable demand.

Doubt I’ll ever get it, though. But I imagine I’ll be able to live with the crushing disappointment.
