I don't think the Obama plan is that bad. He isn't proposing any new taxes, and his ideas will probably give some relief to some people who are really hurting out there. I love the idea of a simplified tax filing system. Politically speaking, I don't think this speech is enough to seperate him from the shadow of Clinton, but unless one doesn't believe that if we are going to have this type of tax system, everyone shouldn't pay their fair share, then I don't see why his ideas should be very upsetting.

Nicki, you sounds very selfish towards the end of your comments. There are families that pay a lot in taxes and can't afford to feed their family. Personally, I think that Obama's plan sounds rather good. Investors, which do well, pay most of the burden in this system. What I think is fantastic is the fact that our senior citizens stop paying taxes all together! Why hadn't anyone thought of that sooner? I am sure people like Nicki don't want to see their Bush tax cuts go but I think it does pave way to a better system.

Nicki,

The thing about tax policy is that it has very little to do with actual budgeting. Both parties use the tax system to carry out their ideological agenda. It is used as a form of income redistribution. Republicans believe in a top down philosophy, while Democrats want money to flow from the bottom up. Unless someone is making $200,000 or more a year, Obama's ideas aren't going to cause a higher tax bill. This whole debate is really about how the government slices the pie. Now the a more relevant question is, how big should the government pie be?

Let's looks at Obama's tax returns. If he uses one deduction to reduce his tax payments then he loses credibility. If we're all in this together, is he paying what the tax code dictates he owes based on his income. Warren Buffet recently moaned that his secretary made around $50-60K annually, and that he paid less taxes the she did. This same hypocrosy resonates from Obama. I bust my tail to make what I make in order for my family to enjoy a higher standard of living. DO NOT penalize me for those efforts. Not every American's dream is to be successful...there are those who dream of living off other's success. Obama wants to make sure they do. I pay my share of taxes (too much) and I give to charity and donate my time to helping others. I do not need the government taking my hard earned dollars and 'showing' me how to help my fellow man!!!!

Jeez!
